Question:
When you guys write do you try to make Gay characters or do your character just go where they want to go sexuality wise?

It's generally rather organic; characters tend to come to me as being a number of things, and sexuality is one of them. It's not static though - one character I thought was bisexual has now moved firmly into the lesbian side of things.

My characters tend to reveal things as the story goes. I had no idea one was bisexual until the words flew on to the page; of course then it all made sense.

I love writing with LGBTQ characters. Like Maria, I feel they're more fun to write, and more interesting. That said, I don't MAKE my characters gay, bi, lesbian, or straight. I can't force them into something they're not. They decide for themselves. Although, since I greatly enjoy writing about LGBTQ characters, most of my main characters end up LGBTQ ones. Smiley

I don't plan it, but I'm open to it. Taro was my first gay character, and finding out he was gay had nothing to do with romance. He was twelve, and a minor character in the book I was working on. Even minor characters have to have personalities, though, and I just couldn't seem to make him come alive. Then I realized he was gay, and he's been a very strong personality since. The book he first appeared in is very much a first novel (meaning it needs TONS of work) so his book ended up being the first I published. (there's a link to an info page in my siggy. And right here on Turtleduck Press is an excerpt that shows what a strong character he became as soon as I got to know him.  Cheesy )

Now I have a lot of GLBT characters. I like smashing stereotypes, and there's lots of that to be done in this genre!
