The Importance of Being Earnest

By |2020-09-14T00:02:25-05:00September 15th, 2020|Categories: Archive, Author Guest Blog, New Releases, Writers on Writing|Tags: , |

by Ciara Smyth I am a terrible person to write about queer joy because I am cranky and when I smile people think I’m being sarcastic. An anecdote I like to tell, in outraged tones, is about the time my oldest friend read my first ever manuscript and said with genuine surprise, ‘This is funny. Which is weird, because you’re…not.” I am yet to recover from this mortal wound. I’m one of those people who cannot really appreciate anything for longer than two seconds because as soon as I achieve something I [...]

by Lucas Rocha Hi, guys! YA Pride invited me to write something about bookish queer joy, and that’s a subject that makes me so happy because, to me, books + queer = joy. I know that we are not especially joyful right now with all that’s happening in the world, so I want to spark a little smile on your face by sharing one of the most exciting moments in my bookish life: my first international book deal. Okay, let’s start from the beginning: my name is Lucas Rocha, and I’m a [...]

#PreorderWithYAPride: Queer YA by Queer Black Authors

By |2020-08-20T19:58:50-05:00June 6th, 2020|Categories: Archive, New Releases|Tags: , |

Let's give an extra bundle of love and support to the queer Black authors in our community! Over the next few weeks we'll be posting some of our favorite previously published titles by queer Black authors on social media, as well as sharing a database of LGBTQIAP+ YA written by Black authors. But we also want to give some love to upcoming titles! One way you can do that is by pre-ordering these three queer YA books by queer Black authors. Let's be clear: structural racism in the book community and publishing industry will not be solved [...]

Queer YA Releases Pushed Back Because of COVID-19

By |2020-05-06T13:58:45-05:00May 6th, 2020|Categories: Archive, Book Lists, New Releases|

by Vee Signorelli Due to COVID-19, hundreds of books have had their release dates pushed back, with several LGBTQIAP+ YA titles included. This is a comprehensive-as-possible list of all the LGBTQIAP+ YA that has been delayed. (If we've missed any, please tweet us at @YA_Pride or email us at contact@yapride.org!) Let's continue to support these authors and stories throughout these uncertain and difficult times. Almost all of these titles were pulled (with permission!) from Julie's list here, an incredibly extensive list of YA and MG titles that have been delayed. Definitely check out that list and follow Julie [...]

#PreOrderHurricaneChild Campaign

By |2020-03-28T13:40:08-05:00March 17th, 2018|Categories: Book Club, New Releases|Tags: , , , |

We are so excited to announce our first ever pre-order campaign, for HURRICANE CHILD by Kheryn Callender. There is very, very little LGBTQIAP+ representation in Middle Grade books. I can list maybe seven books of the top of my head, and could find a few more through research. If I tried to list Middle Grade books about queer kids of color, that list would trickle down to almost zero. YA Pride believes that LGBTQIAP+ representation in Middle Grade is just as important, if not more important, than it is in Young Adult. Sometimes Young Adult gets to readers [...]

Interview with Jen Wang (The Prince and the Dressmaker)

By |2020-03-28T13:40:08-05:00March 14th, 2018|Categories: Archive, Author Interview, New Releases|Tags: , |

Author Jen Wang is here in conversation with Maurene Goo (The Way You Make Me Feel) about cross-dressing, trans identity, and queer teenagers in her recently released graphic novel, The Prince and the Dressmaker.   1. What really resonated with me about The Prince and the Dressmaker were the themes of acceptance and empowerment—with Sebastian, obviously, but also with Frances, the dressmaker. You’re going to hear this book being called a “feminist fairy tale” a lot, which I certainly wouldn’t disagree with. Why did you feel like it was important for you to tell this story right now? [...]
